Los Angeles is a city with a fascinating history, dating back to 8,000 BC. C. when Native Americans hunted along the California coast. The modern city was founded in 1781 by 44 colonists from New Spain, and it has since grown to become a world-class city.

The discovery of oil in the 1890s brought rapid growth to the city, and the completion of the Los Angeles Aqueduct in 1913 supplied water from Eastern California. The residents of Los Angeles were comprised of people of Spanish, Mexican, indigenous American and African descent.Los Angeles is known for its mild climate and wide range of outdoor leisure and recreation activities, as well as its special celebrity aura associated with Hollywood. The lifestyle of Los Angeles residents (who call themselves Angelinos) is based on cars, idealizes single-family housing and favors informality. With notable exceptions, the horizon is mostly horizontal rather than vertical.Los Angeles is a place of extraordinary ethnic and racial diversity, which is largely due to immigration, and it reflects a growing divide between rich and poor.

The city has faced criticism from many detractors, but its defenders admire its mild climate and geographical variety. They claim that their main social problems are similar to those in all big cities and are perhaps even less serious there than in other places.During the Northern California gold rush years, Los Angeles became known as the Queen of Cow Counties for its role in providing beef and other food to hungry miners in the north. Streetcar service in Los Angeles began with horse-drawn carriages (1874-189), cable cars (1885-190), and electric streetcars starting in 1887-1963.During World War II, Los Angeles grew as a center for the production of airplanes, ships, war supplies and ammunition.The inauguration of the Los Angeles Aqueduct provided the city with four times more water than it needed, and the supply of water service became a powerful attraction for neighboring communities. Disputes between city and county governments delayed any response to the floods until a massive storm in 1938 flooded Los Angeles and Orange Counties.Made of wood, steel and telephone poles, it had 4,000 bulbs so that potential owners could see it from all over Los Angeles.

The fruits are surrounded by a 77-beaded rosary that represents the role played by the Spanish missions in the early years of Los Angeles.Much of Los Angeles County was farmland, with an emphasis on livestock, dairy products, vegetables, and citrus fruits. For more than a century, it has been indelibly associated with a mild climate, a wide range of outdoor leisure and recreation activities, as well as with the special celebrity aura associated with Hollywood.In fact, some observers consider it the most modern and quintessential American city. Governor Downey was born and raised in Castlesampson, Roscommon County, Ireland, and arrived in Los Angeles in 1850. Also added that year were Colegrove, a suburb to the west northwest of the city near Hollywood; Cahuenga, a municipality northwest of the old city limits; and a portion of Los Feliz was annexed to the city.Los Angeles has overcome natural deficiencies to establish itself as an important center of trade, agriculture, tourism and industry.
