Los Angeles, or L. A., is a city that has been around for much longer than its official founding date of 1781.It has recently become a world-class city, despite originally lacking some of the essential components associated with city status, such as a natural harbor. The city has overcome these natural deficiencies and established itself as an important center of trade, agriculture, tourism, and industry. It is known for its mild climate, wide range of outdoor leisure and recreation activities, and the special celebrity aura associated with Hollywood.
Angelenos, as the residents of Los Angeles are called, have a lifestyle based on cars, single-family housing, and informality. The horizon is mostly horizontal rather than vertical. Los Angeles is a place of extraordinary ethnic and racial diversity due to immigration, and it reflects a growing divide between rich and poor. Critics refer to Los Angeles as a quiet land of “la la la la” or a place that is reeling from earthquakes, fires, smog, gang wars, and riots.
However, defenders admire its mild climate and geographical variety and claim that its main social problems are similar to those in all big cities and are perhaps even less serious there than in other places. Some observers consider it the most modern and quintessential American city.
